Can You Do the Dr Bernstein Diet on Your Own

What You Need To Know About The Dr Bernstein Diet
The Dr Bernstein Diet was founded by Dr Stanley Bernstein and is available mainly in Canada where there are over 50 clinics. The weight loss is achieved by following a very low calorie diet – around 800 calories a day. This will pose dangers to health for some people and in addition there is a 'secret formula' in the form of injections three times a week, which seems risky. The Dr Bernstein Diet is expensive, according to customers although the prices are not provided on the website. This diet method should not be confused with the various diet methods from Dr Richard Bernstein.
What Are The Side Effects Of The Dr Bernstein Diet?
This is a very low-calorie diet. Side effects may include fatigue, constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, gallstones, blurred vision and disruption of menstrual cycle.
How Much Does The Dr Bernstein Diet Cost?
The website does not provide a price list. However the Dr Bernstein Diet is known to be expensive. A consultation costs around $50.00. The monthly plan is estimated to be as much as $600.00 a month so will be unaffordable to many potential customers.
Our Verdict On The Dr Bernstein Diet
We are not impressed with the Dr Bernstein Diet. This is a very expensive weight loss plan backed up with some dodgy-looking fake medical practices and according to experts there is no reason to take vitamin B injections three times a week, let alone a supposedly 'secret' formula. The medical community have raised concerns about this and Dr Bernstein himself has been cautioned for making false claims in his advertising. When it comes to the diet, there is no mystery why or how it will work. Any weight loss will be down to the dangerously low-calorie diet and nothing more. In our opinion this diet plan is nothing more than a rip off and we certainly would not recommend anyone to try it.

The Dr Bernstein Diet Review
The Bernstein Diet is a weight loss programme that operates mainly in Canada. It was devised by Dr Stanley Bernstein a trained medical doctor and is operated in so-called diet and health clinics with specially trained nurses and doctors across Canada. There are around 50 Bernstein clinics in total.
The Bernstein Diet, sometimes called the Bernstein Program was developed by Dr Stanley Bernstein and should not be confused with the diabetes and weight loss diet plan by Dr Richard K Bernstein (also a weight loss expert in his own right). Dr Stanley Bernstein tends towards the slightly wackier end of the weight loss spectrum. He became interested in the use of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) drops for weight loss back in the 1970s. This practice, known as the Simeons Movement involved a very low calorie diet in combination with HCG a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women. Dr Albert Simeons the founder of this theory has since been discredited and the use of HCG in diet drops has now been banned, thank goodness.

The Dr Bernstein Diet Facts
- The Dr Bernstein Diet was devised by Dr Stanley Bernstein and has nothing to do with the author Richard Bernstein.
- Dr Bernstein used to believe in HGC diet drops for weight loss.
- Dr Bernstein has faced numerous court cases including a criminal conviction for conspiracy to murder.
Dr Stanley Bernstein set up his first diet and health clinic in Toronto in 1977 and has since expanded the business. There are between 50 and 60 Bernstein clinics at the time of writing. Prospective patients are advised that if they have any weight-related medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or sleep apnoea, these conditions can be worked with and probably improved. In addition you get one-to-one sessions with trained medical professionals who will oversee your progress and help you on your weight loss journey.
How to Take The Dr Bernstein Diet
You follow the diet under the supervision of trained staff from one of the clinics.
There is little detailed information about the diet publicised on the website. However according to the programme information, you are given a shopping list so that you can prepare healthy meals rather than artificial meal replacements. Be warned. The Bernstein Diet is a very low-calorie diet but you are supported by regular meetings with your physician and you also undergo regular vitamin B injections.
You also take vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure that you are obtaining adequate nutrients while you lose weight. You learn how to 'break the sugar cycle' by eliminating sugars and simple carbohydrates. In addition to the healthy eating programme, you can buy products direct from the official website. There are some healthy looking soups, a chilli meal and an omelette that you heat up in the microwave. The snacks and meal options are obviously only for occasional use rather than providing the whole menu as is common with many other diet plans.
The Dr Bernstein Diet Concerns:
- Very expensive for what it is, a plain low-calorie diet.
- Dr Bernstein is a real doctor so customers may be misled by his claims.
- The doctor behind this diet is a convicted criminal.
Dr Bernstein has had a chequered and colourful past. He has been criticised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) for the use of unproven weight-loss claims in advertising such as fake before and after pictures. He has been accused of inappropriate sexual relations with a vulnerable patient. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in 1993 and of handling stolen goods. They found 24 Rolex watches at his home after he was arrested.
What Does The Dr Bernstein Diet Claim To Do?
According to the advertising,
You can safely lose up to 20 lb every month. That's 4 to 5 inches off your waistline every single month! It is incredibly motivating to see the pounds melt away.
And,
The Bernstein Weight Loss Program eliminates many of the barriers to success by helping to prevent cravings, headaches, fatigue and rebound weight gain. That's why our patients stick with it, lose the weight, and are happier, healthier people.
However, the product information does not give too much away about the diet. Key to the programme is something called ketosis where you put your body into fat burning mode – using stored fat deposits to fuel energy .You are provided with the right balance of food and as the product information advises,
As long as you don't take in any excess carbohydrates, fats or excess calories, this process works very efficiently at releasing stored energy and food value from your fat cells.
What the advertising does not tell you is that the Bernstein Weight Loss Program is centred on the use of a very low-calorie diet of between 500 calories and 1400 calories a day.
The diet also gives you a way of living healthily and keeping the weight off following the programme:
Once you reach your goal weight, we work with you to customise a Maintenance Plan to reintroduce most foods back into your diet and give you the tools to maintain your new healthy weight for life. We will follow you over the long term to ensure your behaviour changes are in place.
Does The Dr Bernstein Diet Work?
The Dr Bernstein diet is essentially a very low calorie diet so obviously if you are only consuming between 800 calories – 1400 calories a day you will lose weight. However this is not necessarily safe. All the mainstream medical advice is to take weight loss slowly and aim at losing no more than 2 lbs a week. That way you can lose weight in a natural way that does not cause side effects. Starving yourself is not good for health!
Dr Bernstein no longer prescribes HCG diet drops (these have been banned). Instead you attend the clinic for regular B vitamin injections every week. The exact make-up of these injections is unknown and according to Bernstein is a closely guarded secret. Dr Bernstein believes in homeopathy so it is very likely that the injections contain nothing more than sugared water.
We think that people will probably lose weight on this programme due to the very low-calorie diet but that there is nothing easy or special about this method.
What Are The Key Features of The Dr Bernstein Diet?
There is little real information provided about the Bernstein Weight Loss Program as it is sometimes referred to on the website.
However the key features are as follows:
- Very Low-Calorie Diet: Will depend upon your own physical make-up but will vary between 800 calories and 1400 calories a day. If you are obese, a VLCD may help you lose a lot of weight quickly and thus improve medical conditions such as diabetes. However they are not safe for everyone and can be ineffective and dangerous. All reputable medical advice is to lose weight at around two pounds a week.
- Vitamin B Injections: This looks like a gimmick. There is no real need to have vitamin B injections. In addition, the precise formula is a 'secret' so you will have no idea just what is contained in the injections.
Does The Dr Bernstein Diet Have Any Side Effects?
The Dr Bernstein Diet will have side effects. Most notably back in 1988, Dr Bernstein was sued for $700,000 by the family of a patient who died of cardiac arrhythmia while on the programme.
Potential side effects will be due to the very low-calorie diet and may include;
- Fatigue
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Arrhythmia
- Gallstones
- Blurred vision
- Amenorrhoea
Caution:
Not suitable for individuals under 18.
Avoid if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
It is recommended to consult a doctor before starting this diet – especially if you suffer from any health condition – as the severe calorie restriction can be damageable for your health.
Are There Any Customer Reviews For The Dr Bernstein Diet?
We had a search around and did manage to locate some customer reviews for the Dr Bernstein Diet.
Please do not consider this diet. I am a student studying to be a pharmacist and this diet is a risk to your health… From what I read, it was low calorie, and weight loss is monitored by health care professionals, so I thought it should be pretty safe. There was otherwise very little information on the website. When I went to the orientation, I was in a group with a teenage girl and a man in his 50s. The nurse outlined the same plan for all of us (not a good idea given the difference between us all). 800 calories a day… You also require weekly injections of B6 and B12, calcium and potassium (I would never recommend extra potassium unless you are diagnosed low in the vitamin) supplementation and don't actually see a real doctor for a few weeks after starting the programme… Cost me $50 to see how horrible this diet was.
I did it, and it works, it requires discipline though, and you need to do the maintenance plan for at least a year afterwards, if money is not an issue, then it's great for quick weight loss.
I have done this diet and was very successful. However, unless you are committed it will be a waste of money. You have to give it 110% and realise that once you go off the diet (even doing maintenance) you will gain some weight back. It is up to you to maintain it and be aware of what you are eating… As for the symptoms… They are there. Obviously it is going to be different for all, but I definitely suffered from very serious dizzy spells where my vision would even blur out. I was very nervous. They increased my potassium intake and I was better. Additionally, I stopped having my monthly cycle…
Does The Dr Bernstein Diet Offer a Money-Back Guarantee?
You are guaranteed to lose at least 10 pounds every month while following the programme correctly. However, there is no mention of a money-back guarantee.
How To Join The Dr Bernstein Diet?
